No Hate Penn State will host MLK Today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Webster’s Bookstore Cafe to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and bring the State College community together. The event will feature a diversity expo, performances, and a co-created art piece to which attendees will have the opportunity to contribute.
The diversity expo at the event gives civic organizations a platform to introduce themselves to people in the community interested in getting more involved in local activism. Organizations represented include Eco Action, State of State, Students for Better Politics, and the Gender Equity Center.
For the co-created art piece, attendees will be able to quite literally leave their own marks on a dinner table using paint.
“This is to represent that everyone has a spot at the table, and we are all a part of what makes both Penn State and State College so great,” event organizer Elijah Armstrong said.
Local musicians Rashmit Arora and Eric Ian Farmer will perform at the event, in addition to stand-up comedian Joe Esch, who just finished a state-wide tour. R.A.M. Squad student dance crew will also make an appearance.
No Hate Penn State was founded in fall 2017 and seeks to find constructive ways to combat discrimination on college campuses and to celebrate the diversity State College offers. The group hopes to continue planning events to unify the community and speak out against discrimination.
