The Michigan student ticket exchange fiasco ended earlier than expected Tuesday, with all 1,100 incentive packages claimed. According to Penn State athletic communications director Jeff Nelson, approximately 25 percent — or 275 students — took the THON option, which generates $55,000 for the organization.
Approximately two-thirds took the half price season ticket option and the remaining nine percent selected the on-field pass to a Penn State game against either Illinois, Purdue, or Nebraska.
In case you haven’t been following along, a Ticketmaster glitch this summer caused Penn State to oversell student tickets to every home game this season for freshmen. While it has not been an issue so far this season — and according to Nelson, it will not be an issue for any of Penn State’s three home games after this weekend — Penn State believed that the student section would be overcrowded for Saturday’s Homecoming showdown against Michigan, which was announced as a sellout last week.
For this reason, Penn State Athletics offered students three ticket packages if they were willing to trade in their student section ticket on Saturday. All packages included a seat in the Upper South endzone for the game, $10 in LionCash, and this year’s White Out t-shirt.
The individual packages featured two tickets to next year’s Homecoming game/half off on guaranteed student section tickets next season, a $200 donation to THON in the student’s name, or on-field passes to any one of Penn State’s remaining home games.
All of the packages were claimed more than two days before the deadline of October 10 at midnight.
