LIVE COVERAGE: Board of Trustees Meeting Begins, Voting Session to be Held Friday

After a summer of dealing with the Freeh Report’s release, subsequent fallout and several ‘special’ meetings – some open, others closed – the Penn State Board of Trustees is holding its first formal meeting since the harsh NCAA sanctions were handed down in July.

The trustees met in various committees Thursday to discuss a number of issues, but they did not take a formal vote. The entire board will vote on those issues Friday.

The board’s agenda will include a report on the 119 recommendations from a group led by Freeh, the former FBI director, and a crisis management plan.

The Freeh group did not respond to criticisms from the independent group, Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship, that said released a report detailing its problems with the 267-page report. 

Penn State spokesman Dave La Torre confirmed this week the board will discuss renaming the Gary Schultz Child Care Center. However, the former Penn State vice president sent a letter to the board dated Sept. 10 asking it to hold off on making the decision until his trial is over. 

And the board also will hear for the first time hear public comment. Seven individuals are slated to speak and each are allotted three minutes to do so.

The Friday meeting is set to start at 1:30 p.m. at the Nittany Lion Inn, opening with remarks from Penn State President Rodney Erickson. It will be streamed online by WPSU.
