Lady Lions Roll Past Holy Cross

The Penn State Lady Lion basketball team (7-2) traveled to Worcester, Mass., Wednesday night to take on Holy Cross. The Crusaders (1-7) took the Lady Lions to overtime when the two teams met last season, but this time Penn State cruised to a 84-48 victory at the Hart Center.

How It Happened

The Lady Lions went with their usual starting five — guards Teniya Page, Amari Carter, and Lindsey Spann, plus forward Kaliyah Mitchell and center Ashanti Thomas. Penn State got off to a fast start, creating five turnovers and getting multiple players in the scoring column as it led the Crusaders 21-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Penn State held firm on the defensive end in the second quarter — allowing just eight points in those 10 minutes of play. Mitchell drained four from beyond the arc for 12 points in the first half as the Lady Lions led 39-20 at the half.

The offense picked up again in the third quarter as Sierra Moore, Page, and Spann joined Mitchell in double digits. The Lady Lions’ offense expanded their lead to 29, heading into the fourth quarter with a 65-36 lead over Holy Cross.

Dominating on the boards and shooting better than 50 percent from the field, Penn State could cruise in the final quarter unlike its last two matchups that were decided in the waning minutes. The Lady Lions went on to win 84-48.

Penn State finished with four players in double figures, and Spann led all of them with 18 points in the blowout win.
