Lady Lions Open San Juan Shootout with 69-42 Win Over Georgia State

Penn State was supposed to be heading to Puerto Rico this weekend for the San Juan Shootout, but concerns over the Zika virus changed those plans with the tournament moved to Daytona Beach, Fla.

In the first of two games during Thanksgiving weekend, the Lady Lions (4-1) surged past Georgia State (3-3), taking down the Panthers 69-42.

How It Happened

The Lady Lions got off to a slow start offensively, but held firm on the other side of the ball in the first quarter. For the fourth-straight game, senior Peyton Whitted didn’t get the start, but she put up a team-high nine points off the bench in the opening quarter to give Penn State a 16-9 advantage.

The usual top scorers for the Lady Lions, Teniya Page and Lindsey Spann, had scored a combined nine points heading into halftime, while Whitted and Jaida Travascio-Green were the two leading scorers off the bench as Penn State held a 30-16 halftime lead.

Penn State’s offense broke out in the third quarter. The Lady Lions stretched their lead from 14 to 32 with scoring efforts across the board as the quarter ended 57-25. The game was all but won for the Lady Lions by the time the fourth quarter started. Twelve second-half points from Travascio-Green made her the game’s leading scorer with 18 total and it pushed Penn State to a 69-42 win.

Whitted scored a season-high 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double in the win over the Panthers.
