Jury selection wraps up in Sandusky trial

BELLEFONTE, Pa. – Jury selection in Jerry Sandusky’s child sex abuse trial is complete.

12 jurors and 4 alternatives will arrive in court Monday morning to hear opening statements.

Many of the people that will decide Sandusky’s fate have ties to Penn State University and were fans of the former football coach who helped build Linebacker U.

Judge John Cleland asked the potential jurors a number of specific questions including, where they work, how many kids they have, and their ties to Penn State or the Second Mile charity.

One juror who was dismissed told 6 News she was relieved and did not think she could be fair or impartial.

Jerry Sandusky was in the courtroom most of the time studying a binder of notes from one of his attorneys.

He smiled occasionally when Judge Cleland made jokes, but the emphasis remains on getting through jury selection quickly.

The trial will get underway Monday, June 11. 

Judge John Cleland the courtroom that proceedings will begin at 8:30am and run through 5pm each day and that he’d like to have the trial wrapped up in about three weeks.

6 News has also learned that prosecutors offered another plea bargain to Sandusky.

Due to the gag order no one is commenting on the specifics or if Sandusky’s defense team is considering it.

Sandusky faces 52 counts of child sexual abuse.

Prosecutors say they have a strong case with evidence that was not presented in the grand jury report.

On Tuesday, prosecutors and the defense showed a list of potential witnesses, which include Sue and Jay Paterno, members of the Sandusky family, former Penn State president Graham Spanier, former football assistant coach Mike McQueary, and members of the Second Mile Charity.
