Judge: Sandusky Defense to Receive Grand-Jury Transcripts before Trial

Jerry Sandusky’s defense team will receive grand-jury transcripts at least 10 days before a trial begins in the case, a judge has ruled.

Barry F. Feudale, the supervising judge for the grand-jury investigation into Sandusky, issued his ruling Tuesday. It was released to the public Wednesday afternoon via the Centre County website.

The grand-jury investigation led to the 52 criminal charges against Sandusky, 68, of College Township. Accused of a prolonged pattern of child sexual abuse, Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant football coach, has maintained that he is innocent.

Grand-jury proceedings are generally held as confidential. Sandusky’s defense team, led by Joseph Amendola, had sought a release of the transcripts — namely witness testimony before the grand jury — by the end of last month. State prosecutors had asked that the transcripts be held in confidence until a week before the trial.

Both parties have agreed that the transcripts, once released, should be delivered to no one except Sandusky and his defense team. About 581 pages of transcripts will be made available, according to court paperwork.

Jury selection for the anticipated Sandusky trial is scheduled for May 14 at the Centre County Courthouse.
