In the midst of hunting season, one community group is encouraging hunters to donate venison to help provide meals for hungry Pennsylvania citizens.

The program, called Hunter’s Sharing the Harvest (HSH), helps provide quality, high-protein meals to people across the state, as meat from just one deer can provide up to 200 meals.

Donations can be made at participating deer processors and food banks.  Hunters are still responsible for processing fees, but some HSH processors have agreed to process donated venison at a discounted rate.

Not a hunter? You can also support the program.  A monetary, tax-deductible donation of $25 will cover the processing fee for one-half of a deer and provide enough venison for 100 meals.  A $50 donation would cover the processing costs for an entire deer.

Checks should be made payable to: Hunters Sharing the Harvest, and mailed to HSH at 6780 Hickory Lane, Harrisburg, PA 17112.

Questions can be directed to ShareDeer@aol.com, or by calling their statewide toll-free telephone number at (866) 474-2141.  The hotline includes information regarding where to find participating meat processors.

Pennsylvania’s HSH program is recognized as one of the most successful among similar programs in about 40 states.  For additional details about the program, click here.
