The sun shone down on Happy Valley Sunday morning. It was perfect weather for a hugely successful Special Olympics fundraiser. Thousands of people turned out for the Fourth Annual Special Olympics PA Beaver Stadium 5K Race. Non-runners took part in the One Mile Family Fun Walk.
It all began with a rousing mini-pep rally. Sue Paterno, a driving force behind the event, was there to show her support and pose for pictures with fans. Football great, Franco Harris, served as the race starter.
Harris was given the first-ever Special Olympics Pennsylvania Community Hero Award. The honor is presented to a member of the Penn State football family who has shown support and generosity to the Special Olympics.
After Harris gave the order to go, a sea of runners barreled down Porter Rd. Just 16 minutes later, the leaders sprinted down the tunnel and into Beaver Stadium to finish at the 50 yard line. It was an inspiring sight — spectators cheered and clapped as runners hit the finish line. Franco Harris stood on the sideline, high-fiving runners and walkers as they made it into the stadium.
Generous sponsors were recognized for their impressive financial support. Sheetz convenience stores gave $100,000. More than 300 of the runners were Sheetz employees.
The Special Olympics also thanked law enforcement organizations across the state for their financial support. In all, it was a very special day for the athletes, supporters and the community.
Tomorrow, StateCollege.com will post video of all the runners and walkers. We’ll also have race results and the total amount raised for the Special Olympics.
