Penn State added another member to its 2018 recruiting class during the Under Armour All-America Game on Thursday night as four-star defensive end Jayson Oweh announced he had chosen Penn State over Ohio State.
As reported by 247Sports, Oweh actually already signed his letter of intent on Dec. 20 along with other players who came on board during the early signing period, but did not divulge his decision until Thursday night.
‘[Penn State] was family,’ Oweh said on the ESPN broadcast. ‘It felt like the right thing to do and we’re winning it all next year.’
Oweh is the fifth-ranked strong-side defensive end this cycle and the nation’s 97th overall prospect, according to 247Sports, despite never playing football before the fall of 2016. His stock skyrocketed last spring as college programs across the country began to recognize his potential as a 6-3, 236-pound. defensive end. Oweh garnered nearly 30 offers during the recruiting process, but narrowed his focus to the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes this fall.
The Blair Academy (N.J.) star is the first true defensive end to join James Franklin’s group of incoming freshmen, a bunch that already included 21 signees and three-star commit Shaquon Anderson-Butts. Five-star Micah Parsons will begin his career at middle linebacker this spring, and three-star Judge Culpepper is expected to move from end to tackle.
Before Oweh’s signing was known, Penn State was ranked as the fourth-best recruiting class in the nation.
