When former Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin was passed over in last week’s NFL draft, most people expected that it wouldn’t take long for him to hook up with an NFL team. Today, those expectations came true.
“Rookie camp with the Washington Redskins Thursday,” McGloin tweeted just before noon this morning.
Although the Redskins have not officially announced the move and no formal contract has been offered, McGloin’s agents have confirmed the contents of that tweet.
“Matt was honored to receive so many invitations following the draft, with eight teams calling to bring him in,” said his agent Mark Magazu. ”For this weekend’s mini camp, he’s chosen the Redskins because he admires the organization and the way they develop quarterbacks in that system.”
His agent also said that if the Redskin’s don’t offer him a contract after the camp, he’ll attend another team’s camp next weekend. The Redskins seemed to be the most plausible route to the NFL for the former Penn State signal caller.
McGloin had this to say about the news, “For the next few days, I’m a Washington Redskin. And right now my mission is to prove that I can contribute and hopefully be a Redskin next week, then next month, and fight to earn a spot on the team for the season. This is what I’ve fought my entire life to earn, and I’m going to make the most of it.”
The spirited athlete proved his worth as Penn State’s QB this past season. He threw for 3,271 yards and 24 touchdowns, while leading Penn State to an 8-4 record despite harsh sanctions levied by the NCAA. McGloin set a school record for career TD passes (46) and is second in yardage (6,390), and completions (513).
