The Dyslexia Reading Center of Central PA will host the Donut Dash for Dyslexia — the nonprofit organization’s first 5k run and walk fundraiser — at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Grange Fairgrounds in Centre Hall. All ages and abilities from throughout the entire community are invited to attend the, fun, family-friendly event
Donut sampling stands will be placed along the race course, with treats from businesses such as Duck Donuts, Happy Buns, My My Chicken and Way Fruit Farm. The fun will also include a donut-themed craft for young children. Falcon Race Timing will provide timing and prizes will be awarded in several categories.
The Dyslexia Reading Center of Central PA is a tax-exempt charitable organization based in Pine Grove Mills and serving 15 surrounding counties. Students with reading challenges are individually tutored at the center for an hour twice a week after school and during the summer. Instruction is based on methods specifically designed for those with dyslexia, a common learning disability affecting as many as one in five individuals.
Dyslexia is a lifelong condition characterized by difficulty with reading, writing, and spelling skills. It is not a sign of low intelligence, but is an inherited neurological condition that can affect highly intelligent and creative people. Many school systems do not have the resources for individualized instruction for students with dyslexia. It is estimated that two-thirds of 12th graders read and write below proficiency levels and half of new college students need remedial instruction.
The cost of tutoring one individual student can be as much as $,5000 for one year. The center relies on fundraising events and grants to cover operational expenses and provide scholarships to help defray tuition costs for students.
The Center also works to fulfill its educational mission by informing parents, educators and the other members of the community about the nature of dyslexia and how to access effective remedial services in our community.
