PROVIDENCE, R.I. —
The chairman of a Brown University athletics fundraising group said he wants the school to maintain an athletic honor named for ousted Penn State University football coach Joe Paterno.
Art Joukowsky, the founding chairman of the Brown University Sports Foundation, told The Associated Press that he doesn’t want the Ivy League school to abandon Paterno, a 1950 graduate.
A university spokeswoman said Friday the school is reviewing the matter.
The Brown Athletics website says the Joe Paterno ’50 Award is presented to an outstanding first-year varsity male athlete. The first award was presented in 1991. Recipients include former NFL players Sean Morey and Chas Gessner.
Joukowsky, who is also Brown’s chancellor emeritus, said Thursday that Paterno never came to campus to present the award.
