Four local high school baseball teams will take the field on Saturday, April 5 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for the second annual Happy Valley Hardball Classic hosted by the State College Spikes.
Bald Eagle and Bellefonte will meet in a 9 a.m. matchup, followed by State College vs. Mifflin County at noon, according to a news release. The consolation game is set for 3 p.m. and the winners of the first two games will play for the championship at 6 p.m. Admission to all games is free and food and beverages will be available for purchase.
“We’re excited to return to the Happy Valley Hardball Classic for the second year, joining our Central Pennsylvania neighbors who make local baseball special,” State College coach Dave Williams said. “The talent on the field and the rich history of the programs involved make this a unique opportunity for which we are grateful. Playing at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and we truly appreciate everyone who made it possible.”
Bald Eagle, Bellefonte and State College each played in the inaugural Hardball Classic in 2024. Mifflin County joins for the first time, replacing DuBois Central Catholic.
The Eagles won last year’s tournament, beating the Raiders 9-0 in the first game and the Little Lions 17-2 in the championship.
“Playing against traditional powers in our area provides invaluable experience for athletes, allowing them to showcase their skills in a top-notch venue like Medlar Field at Lubrano Park,” Bald Eagle coach Ryan MacNamara said. “This kind of competition is essential for their development and growth as players. It should be a great day of baseball.”
For Bald Eagle and Bellefonte, Medlar Field is also the site of PIAA championship victories. Bellefonte won the title there in 2016 and 2023, and Bald Eagle won back-to-back crowns in 2023 and 2024.
Playing at the MLB Draft League and collegiate Division I stadium is a special opportunity, Bellefonte coach Jon Clark said.
“This event is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our local teams and athletes in a premier venue,” Clark said. “It also serves as a great tribute to the rich tradition of Bellefonte Baseball, from Little League to high school, while honoring those who have dedicated their time and effort to the game.”
The event will have additional local touches, with a logo designed by Bald Eagle Area student Michaela Turner, and Bellefonte Area student Addison Wynkoop singing the national anthem.
