Grammy-nominated drummer, producer and composer Kassa Overall will bring his genre-bending CREAM Tour to Manny’s Live Performance Space in State College this week for an intimate and energetic night of musical innovation fusing hip-hop and jazz.
Doors open at 7 p.m. on Thursday for the all-ages show at the 101 Hiester Street venue. Tickets are $10 for students and $22 general admission and are available through gorintoproductions.com/events.
Fresh off a breakout year that included a 2024 Herb Alpert Award in the Arts and the 2025 Doris Duke Artist Award, Overall heads to Manny’s in support of his newest project, “CREAM,” out Sept. 12. The album reimagines tracks from hip-hop’s golden age through the lens of experimental jazz, electronic production and virtuosic rhythm.
The project sees Overall reshape tracks by the likes of The Notorious B.I.G., Wu-Tang Clan, Dr. Dre, A Tribe Called Quest, OutKast, Digable Planets and Juvenile with original instrumentation in a work that is part homage and part reinvention. As NPR’s “All Songs Considered” put it: “Jazz turned into rap turned back into jazz.”
Overall’s performance at Manny’s is presented by Gorinto Productions.
