Centre County Adds 71 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 4,894 New Positives

Centre County registered 71 new COVID-19 cases on Monday to bring its total to 33,344, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Among total cases, 29,691 are confirmed and 3,653 are probable.

Monday’s tally marked the county’s lowest single-day increase since 56 were reported on Dec. 26. Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 153, down from 235 a week ago and 270 two weeks ago.

Pennsylvania added 4,894 new positives statewide — the lowest single-day increase since Dec. 6 — to bring the statewide total to 2,661,481.

The statewide seven-day moving average is 11,378, down from 15,338 last week and 25,739 two weeks ago.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center has 38 COVID-19 inpatients, five fewer than on Sunday, with three in intensive care [-1] and two on ventilators [-2].

The patients range in age from 42 to 97, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Fourteen are fully vaccinated and 24 are not vaccinated.

Statewide, Pennsylvania saw an increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations — albeit a slight one —for the first time in 15 days, although ICU patients and those on ventilators continued to decline. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 4,763 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized statewide, four more than on Sunday, with 780 patients in intensive care [-8] and 497 on ventilators [-16].

Deaths

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus in Centre County on Monday, keeping the the total at 321.

With 18 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 40,581.

Nursing and Personal Care Home Cases

Long-term care facilities in Centre County recorded three new COVID-19 cases among residents and six among employees, and reported one additional death attributed to COVID-19 among residents. A total of 20 nursing and personal care homes in the county have had a combined 746 resident cases, 720 employee cases and 181 resident deaths.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has 11 active COVID-19 cases among inmates and 23 among staff.

Rockview state prison has 46 active inmate cases and 46 among staff.

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,473 inmates are fully vaccinated, 13 are partially vaccinated and 192 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 308 are fully vaccinated and 320 are not vaccinated.

Rockview has 1,714 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 59 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 342 are fully vaccinated and 375 are not vaccinated.

Transmission level

All 67 counties in Pennsylvania are at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Monday morning, 92,973 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 11 since Sunday, and 14,066 are partially covered [+16]. Booster doses have been administered to 47,029 county residents [+42].

Among the county’s entire population, 68.5% have received at least one dose, 58.3% are fully vaccinated and 49.4% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 73.8% have received at least one dose, 62.6% are fully vaccinated and 52% have received a booster.

Statewide, 75.6% of adults and 65.7% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
