Centre County recorded 33 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday as Pennsylvania totaled its largest single-day increase in 10 weeks, according to Department of Health data.
The county’s new cases bring its total to 35,736 (31,664 confirmed and 4,072 probable). Centre County’s rolling seven-day average for new cases is 25.3, up from 21 a week ago and 7.7 a month ago.
Pennsylvania registered 2,615 new positives, its most since Feb. 23, to bring the statewide total to 2,827,882.
The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 2,096, up from 1,635 a month ago and 632 a month ago.
Hospitalizations
Mount Nittany Medical Center has 12 COVID-19 inpatients, two fewer than on Tuesday, with none in intensive care or on ventilators.
The patients range in age from 28 to 97, according to the hospital’s COVID inpatient dashboard. Seven are fully vaccinated and five are not vaccinated.
COVID-19 hospitalizations throughout Pennsylvania increased for the fifth consecutive day. Statewide, 758 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, 27 more than on Tuesday, with 81 in intensive care [-3] and 36 on ventilators [-5], according to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard.
Statewide COVID hospitalizations are at their highest level in seven weeks.
Deaths
DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents, keeping the total at 349.
With 20 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 44,733.
Community Level
Centre County remains at the “low” community level for COVID-19 for the eighth consecutive week, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s latest update on April 28.
Community levels measure new cases, new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity to determine mitigation guidelines. At the low level, there is no recommendation for indoor masking.
Statewide, 64 of 67 counties are at the low level. A cluster of three Northern Tier counties — Bradford, Sullivan and Susquehanna — are at the high level. At the medium level, the CDC recommends masks indoors in public for those at risk of severe illness. At the high level, universal indoor public masking is recommended.
Prison cases
Centre County’s two state prisons — Benner and Rockview — have no COVID-19 cases among inmates or staff, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.
At Benner, 1,431 inmates are fully vaccinated, 29 are partially vaccinated and 222 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 304 are fully vaccinated and 325 are not vaccinated.
At Rockview, 1,674 inmates are fully vaccinated, two are partially vaccinated and 80 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 350 are fully vaccinated and 367 are not vaccinated.
Vaccinations
As of Wednesday morning, 95,521 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 114 since vaccination data was last updated on April 28, and 14,218 are partially covered [+4]. First booster doses have been administered to 50,756 county residents [+146] and 5,082 have received a second booster [+615].
Among the county’s entire population, 70.4% have received at least one dose, 59.9% are fully vaccinated and 52% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75.8% have received at least one dose, 64% are fully vaccinated and 54.6% have received a booster.
Statewide, 78% of adults and 68.5% of the total population are fully vaccinated.
Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.
All individuals age 12 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot. All individuals 50 and older and certain immunocompromised individuals are now eligible for a second booster shot.
