Centre County Adds 1 COVID-19 Death, 174 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports Record-High Increase for New Positives

Centre County registered one new COVID-19 death and 174 more cases of the virus on Wednesday, while Pennsylvania recorded a single-day high for new infections, according to Pennsylvania Department of Health data.

Statewide, there were 17,520 new cases, eclipsing the previous daily record of 13,286 set on Friday. Reporting, however, tends to fluctuate following holiday weekends, and the commonwealth’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 9,887, up from 6,960 a week ago.

Pennsylvania has had 1,993,720 total cases. With 304 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the commonwealth’s total now stands at 36,504.

In Centre County, the one new COVID-19 death is the 287th since the start of the pandemic and 29th reported this month.

The new cases bring the county’s total 25,658 (23,181 confirmed and 2,477 probable).

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center is treating 44 COVID-positive inpatients, three fewer than on Tuesday, with three in intensive care [-1] and three on ventilators .

The patients range in age from 22 to 88, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Seventeen are fully vaccinated and 27 are not vaccinated.

Pennsylvania has 4,813 COVID-19 inpatients, 165 more than on Tuesday, with 926 in intensive care [+16] and 593 on ventilators [+7], according to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard.

An estimated 88% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, according to a DOH calculation that considers a case as recovered if it has not been reported as a death and it is more than 30 days past the date of the first positive test or onset of symptoms.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has three active COVID-19 cases among inmates, one more than on Tuesday, and 19 among staff [+3].

Rockview state prison has 29 active inmate cases and 11 among staff [+2].

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,521 inmates are fully vaccinated, nine are partially vaccinated and 189 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 303 are fully vaccinated and 325 are not vaccinated.

Rockview has 1,686 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 61 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 341 are fully vaccinated and 376 are not vaccinated.

Transmission level

Centre County remains at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

Across Pennsylvania 66 of 67 counties are at the highest level on the scale, which ranges from low to moderate to substantial to high. Forest County is listed as moderate.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

DOH has not updated COVID-19 vaccination numbers for Wednesday. As of Tuesday morning, 90,909 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated and 12,312 are partially covered. Booster doses have been administered to 35,325 county residents.

Among the county’s entire population, 65.6% have received at least one dose and 56.9% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 71% have received at least one dose and 61.4% are fully vaccinated.

Statewide, 74% of adults and 63.7% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

All individuals age 16 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
