Discovery Space has announced a new set of programs for children this fall.
The science center at 1224 N. Atherton St., State College, hosted multiple weekly programs for kids under 6 to interact and explore exhibits before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Madison Flaherty, assistant director at Discovery Space, is excited to bring old programs back and to introduce new ones.
“Kids and adults are eager to reconnect, make new friends and have fun experiences together. Why not learn a little something while you do it?” Flaherty said in a news release.
Michele Crowl, the executive director of Discovery Space, is also excited for the programs to return.
“By designing the programs for children and caregivers to learn together, we are extending their onsite experience,” Crowl said. “We hear stories from parents that their children will bring up something from the program days or even weeks after. What might seem like a brief 30 minute activity at Discovery Space has the power to leave a lasting impact on a child when they share that experience with a family member or friend.”
Programs being offered in the fall that are free with membership or paid admission include:
- Science Adventures and Art: Best for children ages 3 to 5 with a caregiver, this program combines the arts with science and engineering in the natural and human-made world. The program runs every Wednesday from 10:30-11 a.m.
- Science and Adventures: Best for children ages 3-5 with a caregiver, this program explores sciences through a story and hands-on STEM activities. This program runs every Thursday from 10:30-11 a.m.
- Wiggle and Shake: Best for children ages 1-5 with a caregiver, this program offers a variety of interactive STEM games designed for young children. Participants can bring their family and a friend and drop-in anytime during the hour. This program runs every Friday from 10-11 a.m.
Other activities that Discovery Space offers include a new STEM Club every Saturday from 10-10:30 a.m. Designed for children ages 3-7 years old, this activity consists of crafts for adults to do with their children. Members can purchase a season pass for $25 or drop in for $5/session.
For older children, Discovery Space offers youth workshop hours for kids ages 8-14 every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at The Rivet makerspace. The workshop allows children choose which projects they would like to work on and unleash their creativity with the guidance of skilled staff and instructors. Drop-in registration is $30. This program is also a drop-off program for kidsl adults do not need to stay on-site.
