A Centre County bakery is closing its Pleasant Gap shop, but it isn’t going away completely.

The Cakeshop by Tati plans to close its storefront at 113 E. College Ave. after Dec. 23 as owners Tati and Derek Polay start the next chapter for their business, they wrote in a Facebook post on Friday.

Calling it an “exciting but difficult decision,” the Polays wrote that they are “simply consolidating the business to focus on what we do best: our cakes, wholesale croissants and special pre-orders (with some fun pop-ups sprinkled in).”

The Cakeshop will continue to have a pickup spot for croissants and pre-order items, and their croissants will remain available at a number of retail businesses around the county.

“We can’t thank you enough for being part of this journey, for your morning coffee visits, your pastry runs, and for letting us share in your birthdays, weddings, and every sweet celebration in between,” the Polays wrote. “So many of you have become friends, and we’re endlessly grateful for your support over the years.”

Both graduates of the Culinary Institute of America who worked at high-profile bakeries and restaurants in Manhattan, Centre County native Derek and Peruvian-born Tati moved back to Derek’s hometown during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Tati’s home-based cake business grew rapidly, and the couple opened their Pleasant Gap bakery shop in 2021.

In addition to baked goods, coffees and custom orders, The Cakeshop has offered fine-dining pop-up dinners, catering and private chef service.

“This next chapter is about growth (stay tuned for new announcements), creativity, and family, and we’re so thankful to have you all cheering us on,” the Polays wrote.

The Cakeshop by Tati’s Pleasant Gap store remains open through Dec. 23, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.
