Man Jailed After Standoff With Police Near Milesburg

A Centre County man who police say threatened a woman with a gun was arrested after an hourslong standoff with law enforcement Tuesday night near Milesburg.

Joshua L. Resides, 42, of Boggs Township, is charged with misdemeanor counts of terroristic threats and simple assault and a summary offense of harassment. District Judge Kelley Gillette-Walker denied bail at his preliminary hearing on Tuesday night.

State police at Rockview were dispatched at 3 p.m. to a residence on the 200 block of Sparrow Drive in Boggs Township after a 48-year-old woman reported Resides pointed a gun at her.

The woman, who was sitting on the steps of the home when police arrived, said she had been staying elsewhere for several days because she was fighting with Resides. He contacted her on Tuesday to tell her she could get her belongings from the home, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

After she moved her belongings to her car for about 45 minutes, Resides took a small black pistol out of his front pants pocket, pointed it at her head and said “I have the right to shoot you, you f***ing b***h,” implying that she was trespassing, police wrote. Resides then allegedly lowered the pistol and aimed it at her body while recording her with his cell phone.

Resides went back inside the residence and the woman continued to move her possessions for about 30 minutes until she returned to the front door and found it locked, according to the affidavit. At that point, she called police.

State troopers made several unsuccessful attempts to contact Resides, then established a perimeter around the property.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including a SWAT team, responded to the scene. After several hours, Resides came to the door and was taken into custody, police wrote.

The affidavit and a public information release did not detail if police had any interactions with Resides during the standoff.

Centre County 911 posted a message on Facebook at 7:40 p.m. advising residents to avoid the area of Breon Park in Milesburg because of the large police presence working an active scene.

Resides was arraigned at 9:20 p.m. in Bellefonte. He is detained at the Centre County Correctional Facility.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 20.
